Last Word: There's This Little Thing Called "Research" You Might Like To Try It

Who could have predicted that the right would have used the law like that? Everybody who wasn't a credulous fool. Like you, Sparkles. Like I said, you and your ilk own this abomination.   Steve Simels

Well, you know, Sims, that it is possible to check the vote in the congress and see who supported it.  Names like Ted Kennedy, Paul Wellstone,  Russ Feingold, Clairborne Pell, Harris Wafford, Bernie Sanders, Henry Waxman, Jerrold Nadler, Thomas Andrews,  geesh, I wouldn't be surprised if pretty much the entire progressive caucus were co-sponsors.

Oh, and looky at that.  The three Senators who voted nay were Harlan Matthews and Robert Byrd, conservative Democrats and, you'll love this, JESSE HELMS THE PALEO-REPUBLICAN RACIST, FASCIST.

But fact checking isn't something the Eschaton Brain Trust is big on, as I said.

  1. What the hell is the argument here? Is Simels that stupid? And I only ask because he puts his name to this idiotic comment about who "owns" this Hobby Lobby decision (which is not, despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth, the end of civilization as we know it). Hell, the news stories are about how Kennedy worked with Hatch to propose and get RFRA passed! And the vote to approve it was, as you point out, nearly unanimous in the Senate (again, per recent news reports, I didn't have to do any research to get that information).

What kind of blind idiot is this guy?

  2. He's hardly alone, even at "The Brain Trust". I think the biggest effect of blogging and online media is the reinforcement of mutual ignorance and dishonesty that comprise most unmoderated comment threads, and quite a number of those which are moderated. That's one of the things that the NYT lauded on the 50th anniversary of the Sullivan decision, the ability of lies to destroy reputations was seen as some great boon for something they call "freedom". Freedom from the truth, apparently. And then there is the quaint notion of evidence and documentation. Apparently for the atheists of Atrios "evidence' is just a place marker in a statement that ends "so we win".

  4. I'm fully prepared to bet he'd never heard of the Freedom of Religion Restoration Act before yesterday, and I'll bet he's not alone in that.

Smarter pseudo-leftists. No, if they were smarter they'd probably figure out that they're not really leftists.
